Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin Stun Kang Min Hyuk/Seo Seung Jae In Badminton Asia Championships 1st Round

Ningbo: Three Malaysian men’s badminton doubles pairs all achieved victories on Wednesday at the 2024 Badminton Asia Championships, with World No. 19 Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin bravely defeating South Korea’s reigning World Champions Kang Min Hyuk/Seo Seung Jae 21-13, 21-18, advancing to the round of 16!

Goh/Izzuddin achieved a 2-2 career head-to-head record against the World No. 2 pair after Wednesday’s victory and will play China’s World No. 11 Ren Xiangyu/He Jiting next.

Earlier, two Malaysian men’s doubles pairs, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, as well as the Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun, defeated the Indian pair Hariharan Amsakarunan/Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi 21-15, 21-14 and Chen Boyang/Liu Yi 21-15, 21-12 in their respective matches.

Chia/Soh will play Kenya Mitsuhashi/Hiroki Okamura of Japan while Man/Tee will take on Lee Jhe-Huei/Yang Po-Hsuan of Taiwan next.

In men’s singles, Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia easily defeated Priyanshu Rajawat of India 21-9, 21-13, and will battle Chou Tien Chen in the second round.

Malaysia’s sole representative in the women’s singles, Goh Jin Wei, fought hard in three sets but was narrowly defeated by former Indian world champion PV Sindhu, ending her journey in the first round.

This was the 6th encounter between the World No. 33 Goh Jin Wei and the current World No. 12 PV Sindhu. After battling for 64 minutes, Goh lost to Sindhu 21-18, 14-21, 19-21.

Meanwhile, all Malaysian representatives were eliminated in both the women’s doubles and mixed doubles events.
